John Elliot
AA Dip RIBA
He started studying to be an Architect at the age of 16 at the Beaux Arts orientated Southern College of Art, now the Bournemouth University; from there he won a scholarship to the progressive Architectural Association School in London. Upon graduating John Elliott took a course in product design at the Central School of Art in London before winning the prestigious Finnish Government scholarship and finishing his post graduate studies at the Institute of Technology in Helsinki. After Finland he moved to Sweden where he spent three years in the office of Ralph Erskine.
His years in Finland and Sweden had a profound influence on his approach to the practice of architecture where offices perceive the profession as one of creative design for the human environment. So whether the project was a factory in northern Finland, a timber chair, a range of patterns for linoleum flooring, a town plan or just straightforward architecture this practical experience began a lifetime of wide angle focus on design.
It was the town planning experience in Sweden that led him to be the first official town planner of Abu Dhabi in 1967 and the beginning of a specialisation in the Arabian peninsula initially involving the first developments of Abu Dhabi, it continued with the King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah and culminated with the design of projects such as the Emirates Palace Hotel and the 6600 apartment complex Jumeirah Beach residence in Dubai.
After the King Abdulaziz University his ability to wear different design hats but manage projects like an architect took him into the world of Interior Design as managing partner of Dale Keller & Associates, best known for their specialisation in luxury hotels but in John's case for the interiors of the Sultan of Brunei's three million square feet State Palace in Bandar Seri Begawan. Later, working from DKA's Hong Kong office he was involved in several new hotels in China and other parts of the Far East. It was the there that he started working with WATG specifically with the founder himself "Pete" Wimberly on projects in Greece, New Zealand and Hong Kong. This association led him to be a founder member of the WATG London Office. His WATG cv states “John Elliott has arguably more hotel and resort planning and design experience than any architect in the world”. His broad design background has given him the unusual ability to comprehend the final product as a totality of design disciplines rather than a sequential or additive process.

Zeljko Cabarkapa
Areas of expertise
Ground investigation, ground improvement, foundation design, retaining walls, slope stability, embankments over soft soil, numerical analysis, flow through porous media, partially saturated soils.
Recent experience
Dr Zeljko Cabarkapa joined GCG in February 2000 and became a Director in 2010. Prior to that, from 1991 to 1996 he was a University Lecturer in the Civil Engineering Faculty of Belgrade University and consultant. His research interests were in shear strength of soils and shallow foundations.
Since joining GCG Dr Cabarkapa has been involved in advanced finite element analyses of various geotechnical problems. He has carried out numerical analyses of earth retaining structures, tunnels (NATM, segmental, brick lined and cut and cover), and embankments over soft soil, and deep excavation in stiff clays including the deep excavations for The Shard in central London. He carried out a number of analyses of the Nicoll Highway collapse in Singapore aiding a team of expert witnesses and was recently involved in assessment of the collapse of a basement slab in Serbia.
Dr Cabarkapa has designed and analysed foundations of all kinds including rafts and piles in various locations worldwide. He has analysed the interaction of piles with new and existing tunnels and pile groups. His design or review work has included: design, specification and interpretation of site investigations, heave and settlement analyses, liquefaction assessment, a detailed assessment of ground improvement measures on the New Opera House in Athens, and a slope stability assessment for a coal terminal over very soft clay in Indonesia.
Dr Cabarkapa has provided advice to a wide range of clients, including contractors, consultants and developers with recent projects including Dublin Port Tunnel, Channel Tunnel Rail Link, White City and King’s Cross Redevelopment. He is currently advising on rock slope stabilisation aspects for the Olmos project in Peru. He has just completed advising on the design and construction of a new port development in Peru.
Dr Cabarkapa’s publications cover soil behaviour of unsaturated soils, soil-structure interaction and the performance and analysis of retaining structures. He has reviewed technical papers for Geotechnique and acted as external examiner for a PhD project at Imperial College London.
Areas worked
UK, Serbia, Montenegro, Iraq, Peru, Russia, Algeria, Republic of Ireland, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore. Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Greece, Indonesia.
Previous Experience
He started his career with Energoproject. His work in the office was combined with fieldwork both in Serbia and abroad. He was engaged in static and dynamic (earthquake loading) finite element analyses of an arch dam in Algeria. His projects included basic and detailed design and construction of concrete dams in Iraq (Badush I and II), numerical analyses of tunnels, grout curtains and stability analyses on Bekhme Dam in Iraq.
In 1991 Dr Cabarkapa was employed as an academic staff member at the University of Belgrade, where he was involved in teaching, research and consultancy. He taught the undergraduate course in Soil Mechanics and Earthworks. Research activities involved mainly theoretical and numerical considerations of non-linear failure envelopes for soils. His MSc thesis was related to the theory of bearing capacity of shallow foundations on sand. His consulting work was concerned with site investigation, laboratory testing and foundation design for different structures such as sports arenas, historic monuments, bridges and silos.
In 1996 Dr Cabarkapa joined South Bank University, London to undertake research on Mechanical Behaviour and Modelling of Unsaturated Soils. This work involved experiments using a new triaxial apparatus equipped with local strain transducers and bender elements for testing unsaturated soils. Suction controlled triaxial tests were performed to investigate the shape of the yield surface for unsaturated silt sample with particular stress history. A numerical model was applied to the simulation of coupled moisture, air and heat transfer in unsaturated soils and used for dynamic measurements of soil water retention curves. Awards

Ross’s hotel design career began in Beirut, working with the celebrated French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon as project manager on commissions in the UAE, Oman, Bahrain and Syria as well as in Lebanon. In 2004, Ross moved to the Caribbean to assume responsibility as interior design specialist for The Ritz Carlton in Grand Cayman; he was subsequently appointed resort architectural and interior design manager by the developers of the St Regis Temenos Hotel Spa & Resort on Anguilla.
Such experience meant that, on joining ReardonSmith, Ross quickly made a substantial contribution to a number of our most prestigious projects, both at home and overseas. In particular, he has developed a strong working relationship with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, working with the operator on new-builds and refurbishment in Baku, Montenegro and London. The new Four Seasons in Baku, now under construction, will be nothing short of the most luxurious hotel in the city. It was ReardonSmith’s first project in Baku and such was the client approval of the proposed scheme, we have since been awarded two further projects in the city. Ross is managing one of these, a development of high-end apartments above what will be Baku’s most chic retail destination. In London, Ross also led the architectural team during the early stages of the refurbishment of the Park Lane Four Seasons. In addition, Ross is the director responsible for our Porto Montenegro project which will see the creation of a new marina destination aside the Adriatic on a 24ha site along the spectacular coastline of Montenegro. The first phase is focusing on the waterfront development and will include a 350-berth marina, high-end apartments, retail and restaurants. As part of this phase nears completion, Porto Montenegro is already being hailed “the new Monaco”.
