Matteo Gatto
Principal, Matteogatto & Associati, Italy
Architect with more than 20 years of experience in the design and organization of major events, he is now principal of matteogatto&associate srl creative hub of project coordination at various scales. He was the technical director and editor of the Rome dossier for the candidature to host the 2030 Universal Expo.
He won the competition and realised the design of the Italian Pavilion in Dubai 2020 with Carlo Ratti and Italo Rota as well as drafting the contents of 39 other pavilions for developing countries in the same Expo.
He realised with Ega the venues for the events of Matera 2019 European Capital of Culture. He was Director of Urban Planning and Architectural Design at Arexpo S.p.A., a company set up with the aim of developing the land on which the Universal
Exhibition in Milan was held, as well as Chief Architect of Expo Milano 2015 where he directed the Plan Office (53 designers), and was also Director of Visitor Experience and Exhibition Design and Director of Thematic Areas.
He coordinated the entire design of the Expo Milano 2015 exhibition site, signing the Masterplan and preliminary design for a value of almost 2 billion euro.
He was a lecturer in Landscape Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic for several years. Graduated with honors, he obtained a PhD in Urban Projects and Policies with a thesis on Infrastructure Landscape and carried out a research grant on urban landscape. Winner of awards and scholarships, he has participated in international seminars and study experiences.
He has collaborated with numerous studios on competitions and projects including Steven Holl Archi-tects for the New Headquarters of the Lombardy Region, HoK for the competition for the Porta Nuova Gardens in Milan, OMA/AMO for the Bovisa masterplan and Herzog&DeMeuron, Burdett, Boeri and McDonough for the concept plan of the Expo exhibition site in Milan.
He has been a consultant to the City of Milan for the drafting of parts of the PGT and for urban planning projects and policies.
A lecturer at the Universities of Bergamo, ETSAB Barcelona, Valladolid, ETH Lausanne, FAUTL Lisbon, HAU Hanoi, UCL London and Paris Belleville, he has exhibited his research and projects at the Venice Architecture Biennial from 2002 to 2014, and at the Barcelona Landscape Biennial in 2003 as well as the Beijing Biennial in 2006.
He writes in several international magazines and Journals.
